A Lecture with Miki Kratsman at the School of Visual Art NY

Artis, the School of Visual Arts’s Masters of Arts in Curatorial Practice, and the International Center of Photography present an evening with acclaimed Israeli photographer Miki Kratsman. After an introduction by Steven Henry Madoff (Chair, MA Curatorial Practice, School of Visual Arts), Kratsman will discuss three recent bodies of work. A conversation with ICP curator Maya Benton will follow.

Miki Kratsman is an Argentinean-born photographer who has lived in Israel since 1971.
One of Israel’s most acclaimed photographers, Kratsman has been covering the West Bank and Gaza as a photographer for the Israeli newspapers Ha’aretz andHadashot for more than thirty years. He has devoted his career to documenting the evolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and its consequences on the daily life of the Palestinian population. Rather than focusing his lens on extreme violence or cataclysmic events, Kratsman’s accumulation of the quotidian moments and emotions that constitute the daily lives of Palestinians – celebrations and funerals, demonstrations, rage, anger, hope, memory, revolt, hatred and acceptance – constitute a penetrating and disquieting visual record of the occupation. His wide-ranging projects, which include incisive depictions of checkpoints, settlements, the native Bedouin population, the military and the psychological effects of surveillance reflect the photographer’s contention that his work should not only document the world that he sees, but should also be used as a tool to change it.
Known primarily as a press photographer, Kratsman has taught at Israel’s leading art schools for two decades. From 2006-2014 he served as head of the photography department at the Bezalel Academy of Arts, Jerusalem, where he has mentored a generation of internationally celebrated Israeli photographers. Kratsman has been awarded Harvard University’s Robert Gardner Fellowship in Photography from the Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology (2011) and Israel’s Emet Prize for Science, Art, and Culture (2011). Kratsman exhibits widely in Israel and throughout the world, including exhibitions at the Venice Beinnale; Martin Gropius Bau, Berlin; The Jewish Museum, New York; the Sao Paulo Biennale; MARCO, Spain; The Centre of Contemporary Culture, Barcelona; ARCO, Madrid; Felix-Nussbaum-Huas, Germany; Witte de With, Rotterdam; Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Santioago, Chile; and the American University Museum in Washington, D.C. His most recent book, The Resolution of the Suspect, with acclaimed critic and photography theorist Ariella Azoulay, will be released in May. He is represented by Chelouche Gallery, Tel Aviv.
