ORLAN (name in all caps as per the artist’s request) is an innovative conceptual artist. She is active since the seventies and gained the reputation of a controversial and provocative artist-celebrity. She reached fame after publishing a series of performance works broadcasting worldwide plastic surgeries she underwent. During those surgeries she had cheekbone implants inserted into her forehead, to challenge established beauty ideals.
Orlan is using her body and face as a new artistic medium, structuring and restructuring her image till it is formed into a hybrid artwork. She works with traditional mediums as well as contemporary technologies such as augmented reality, AI, and robotics. She uses medicinal techniques such as plastic surgery and biotechnology to transform her image while exploring social phenomena such as identity search and the perception of beauty.
ORLAN’s artworks challenge social constructs, question social phenomena, and deregulate conventions. She opposes natural, social, and political determinism, all forms of domination, male supremacy, religion, cultural segregation, and racism, while using humor, parody, and even the grotesque.
ORLAN is one of the most important French artists internationally recognized.
She is not tied to any one material, technology or artistic practice. She uses sculpture, photography,
performance, video, 3D, video games, augmented reality, artificial intelligence and robotics (she has
created a robot in her own image that speaks with her voice) as well as scientific and medical techniques such as surgery and biotechnology… to question the social phenomena of our time.
ORLAN created the magazine Art-Accès Revue on minitel
ORLAN founded and organised the International Symposium of Performance and Video in
