Ira Eduardovna: ‘The Iron Road’ | Solo Exhibition at Tel Aviv Museum of Art

Opening: Thursday, 16.06.2023

Curator: Raz Samira

Ira Eduardovna’s two-channel video, The Iron Road (2021), describes her family’s train ride from Uzbekistan to Russia, at the end of which they immigrated to Israel. Taking four nights and three days, the journey was the culmination of months of preparation for departure from their homeland.

The artist reconstructs the train cabin from memory, returning her family to it. She directs the scene so that in the present she tells them about their future in the Promised Land and their feelings about the situation. Eduardovna exposes the filmed set and the act of directing to create stories within stories, images within images, cinema within cinema. All of these are reflected in another, parallel channel comprising black-and-white still photographs of key scenes from the journey, to produce a photographic installation.
