Tal Amitai-Lavi (b. 1969, Israel) is a multidisciplinary artist, engaging with painting, drawing, sculpture and installation. She graduated cum laude from Hamidrasha School of Art, Beit Berl College and holds a B.A. also cum laude from the Multidisciplinary Program of the Arts, Tel Aviv University. Furthermore she has obtained an MA in Creative Arts from the University of Haifa.
Amitai-Lavi has had several solo exhibitions in Israel: “We are a Bound Family” (1996); “Aleph for Ohel [tent] / Bet for Bayit [house]” (2001); “(temporary) Happiness” (2004); “Light Construction” (2014).
She has participated to numerous group exhibitions in museums, major galleries, and in a variety of venues. Meanwhile her work found home in some of the finest collections both in Israel and abroad.
In 2013 she received a grant from the Israel National Lottery Council for the Arts for her “Light Construction” catalogue. Later in 2010 her work “Direct Hit / The House on Nahalal St.Haifa” was awarded the Sotheby’s prestigious “Under The Hammer” prize at “Fresh Paint 3” fair. Her solo exhibition “(temporary) Happiness,” 2004, was supported by the Forum of Art Museums and by the Beracha Foundation.
In 2002 and 2003 she received an Artist-Teacher Award from The Israeli Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport; and in 1996 and 1997 she won the America-Israel Cultural Foundation Scholarship (Sharett Foundation).
Tal Amitai-Lavi’s work explores personal and universal thematic; from family and childhood to marriage and home.
Her work transcends the private and addresses universal values that the viewer can identify with. In many of her works Amitai-Lavi aims to capture a childhood fantasy, a suggestive longing and a promise of happiness, which she considers as an elusive, false mirage.
The artist uses of unusual materials like sewing thread, salt, plastiline, soda powder and kinetic stands among others.
